Canvas
Blending urban sophistication with suburban tranquillity.
Q&A
How does Canvas respond to Brisbane’s shift in medium-residential subtropical living?
Canvas brings a new approach to suburban living in twenty-one highly liveable dwellings in an established riverside suburb. The mid-rise apartment concept responds to rising density and urban pressures by creating apartment homes that bring aspect, amenity and identity to this building type to cater for long term dwelling. The project provides density while prioritising privacy and ventilation through design elements such as the engineered internal staircase also enhancing light and access within the spaces. The rooftop stands atop as a communal retreat offering Newstead and CBD views. Canvas transcends conventional suburban developments, through thoughtful design, and community-centric living.
What role does concrete play in Canvas’s landscape-led neighbourhood approach?
Drawing on an era of maritime industry, Canvas uses heavy monolithic forms to create connection to the built fabric of the neighbourhood, a rhythm of spaces and landscape of its streets. The curved concrete exterior creates a sense of substance and allows the form to integrate with the landscape in the pattern of nearby trees that line the streets from Bulimba Memorial Park towards the riverbank. In combination with horizontal planters, vertical trellises encourage nature to consume the crafted built form, bringing a seasonal quality and a sense of home to the architecture.
