Wahat Al Karama
Location: Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia
Wahat Al Karama is an internationally significant installation and pavilion in Abu Dhabi by bureau^proberts and UAP in collaboration with internationally recognized artist Idris Khan.
This significant sculptural installation and pavilion in Abu Dhabi combines an artist conceived monument and a collaboration between architect and artist for the pavilion for remembrance and reflection. The monument honours the heroes of the UAE and acts as a place of commemoration for their families, public dignitaries and the public.
The project is integrated within the 42,000sqm Memorial Park (designed by Aecom) with the sculptural dedication and Pavilion influencing the landscape direction. It is a demonstration of collaboration between artist and architect in leading a team of professionals to create a monument and place of international significance. It was designed and delivered within a 12 month program.
The monument and pavilion are sculptural insertions in contemporary, established landscape. The curation of an artist with a strong awareness and connection to the cultural and social sensitivities was pivotal in the success of the project. Equally the profile and practice of the selected artist Idris Khan, allowed an adventurous and completely unique approach to the project.
A similar approach is proposed for the Ross Bandstand project. An artist will be selected to work with the architectural team to firstly distill the qualities to be conveyed by the Pavilion and Centre and secondly to assist in generating form and expression that deliver those qualities.
