Bardon House

Respectful and familiar yet stridently new.

Q&A

How does Bardon House contribute to the life of the street and neighbourhood?

From the street, Bardon House creates a form and expression that, whilst respectful, is stridently new in abstracting the familiar architectural forms of the neighbourhood. The gables and hip roofs of the area are contemporised in a simplified triangulation of shapes and planes that drape over the plan. A skylight inserted into the roof defines the entry and obscures inside from out. The frontage is a screened edge that forms a transition space between landscape and entry providing privacy, a play of light and shade and promotes a sense of intrigue, to be enjoyed from the street.

How does Bardon House embrace passive design principles?

The major initiative in creating a sustainable home was determining an orientation that would capture predominant north-east breezes to cool and ventilate the house. A key feature is the entirely openable northern edge which is offset by electrically adjustable louvres around the living and circulation spaces. This delivers cooling breezes on most days given its hilltop location and the option to close when cool. The northern living edge is also formed to allow solar access only in cooler months to heat up the slab and provide thermal mass. Such conditions enable inhabitants to enjoy the nuanced changes that occur with the seasonal and daily cycle of nature.
