Thornton wins at Australian Good Design Awards

The 2024 Good Design Awards were announced at the ICC Sydney on 20 September.

A new residential tower in Brisbane’s Kangaroo Point, Thornton, has won an Australian Good Design Award for its innovation and role in shaping Brisbane as a world city. Designed by bureau^proberts for JGL Properties, Thornton seamlessly integrates a restored heritage building with a contemporary, sculptural design that reshapes the city’s riverfront skyline.

Our Managing and Creative Director Liam Proberts says “Thornton aims to show what’s possible for the future of subtropical urban living – particularly in Brisbane. We wanted to create a building of enduring quality and value and drew on the contributions that some public buildings and galleries make to the city scape.”

Thornton’s contributors include gallerist Philip Bacon AM, restauranteur Thierry Galichet, artist Ralph Wilson, and developer John Livingstone, who are all leaders in their field.

The Good Design Awards jury commended bureau^proberts for the design’s sensitive response to the sub-tropical climate and its careful integration of local heritage. “The project achieves a harmonious balance between respecting local character and embracing modern architectural advancements. Its well-considered design and luxurious interiors reflect a sophisticated understanding of urban development.”

Designed with art in mind, Thornton allows residents to showcase their most prized art collections. Philip Bacon guided the development of world class, gallery-standard art display and lighting systems, enabling each residence to become a private gallery. Kitchen functionality and joinery details have been influenced by Thierry Galichet to perform for either the home cook or professional chef, positioned to take full advantage of the river and CBD aspect.

Good Design Australia Managing Director Rachel Wye says: “This year’s Awards reflect the profound ripple effects that exceptional design can have on people, place and planet. The projects honoured in these Awards exemplify how thoughtful design can drive meaningful change, not only enhancing user experiences and the way people interact with the world, but also contributing to a more sustainable and more prosperous future.”

The 2024 Awards were announced at the International Convention Centre Sydney on 20 September and highlighted excellence across 12 Design Disciplines, covering more than 32 Awards Categories.
