Babylon, Loreto College
Location: Coorparoo, Brisbane
Client: Loreto College
The Babylon project is a significant extension that provides a three level, six laboratory carpark complex with solar energy and disabled access. The project re-orientates an existing building towards the centre of the school by providing circulation and terrace spaces which link the new laboratories with the rest of the school.
Access for the disabled and visually impaired students is incorporated into the rest of the school by a vertical link which punctures the existing school block. The provision of workable, contemporary lab spaces, a requirement for covered carspaces and universal access formed the client brief, and the identified need to re-connect this building with the rest of the school completed the aims for the design.
The building provides covered circulation spaces, which have been relocated to the north, and well ventilated north/south one-room-wide spaces. Solar panels were incorporated in the awning structure and this alternative energy process is incorporated in the school curriculum.
